Hotel’s St. David’s Day boost for Eisteddfod, The Bryn Awel Hotel, Mold

A Welsh-themed five-course dinner donated by the Bryn Awel Hotel and organised by Y Cymdeithas Cymraeg, Mold’s Welsh Society has raised over £800 for the National Eisteddfod to be held in the town between August 4-11.

Using finest Welsh ingredients, the hotel prepared a feast for more than 70 guests, which included a traditional leek broth ‘cawl cennin’ starter, Flintshire-reared chicken in Caerphilly sauce and a homemade bara brith dessert.

Guest speakers were award winning Welsh actors husband and wife team John Ogwen and Maureen Rhys.

The Welsh Society organises a St. David’s Day dinner every year, but this year, thanks to the hotel’s kind offer, the event presented the perfect opportunity to raise money for the Eisteddfod.

Selwyn Evans, Chair of the Eisteddfod’s Finance Committee said: “We are very grateful to Greg Shankar and all at the hotel for laying on such a tremendous dinner and for all their help and support towards the Eisteddfod in general. Events like this show how well the Eisteddfod is being received in all aspects of the community and the funds raised are very welcome.”

Staff at the Bryn Awel, the oldest hostelry in Mold, have been busy learning Welsh in time for August thanks to a link up with the University of Bangor and the Eisteddfod’s Officer for Learning, David Owen Jones.

The staff are completing a one-hour learning session every week until the summer and also aim to practice their new skills during the week on some of the hotel’s Welsh speaking customers.

Greg Shankar, Director of the Bryn Awel Hotel, said: “I think it’s extremely important that Mold gets behind the Eisteddfod. We were really happy to help with the dinner and, with the help of our lessons, are looking forward to being able to greet visitors to the town in their native Welsh language.”

The St. David’s Day dinner also saw the draw for the Eisteddfod’s grand raffle which has been running for several months and sold over 5,000 tickets. The top prize of £1,000 was won by Gwenith Jones from Mold and second prize of a weekend in Prague donated by First Choice went to a lucky winner in Carmarthen. Six other prize winners also scooped prizes.
