Mold's oldest hotel celebrates 40 years, The Bryn Awel Hotel, Mold
26th January 2004
A Mold hotel dating back forty years is celebrating its ruby anniversary with a new look.
The Bryn Awel on the Denbigh Road in Mold is a landmark of the town and is undergoing a major refurbishment as part of an ambitious plan by general manager Greg Shanker to transform it.
Originally a bakery with a shop outlet on the High Street in the 1920s, Bryn Awel was the family home of Fred Roberts, a well-known Mold architect, before being bought to be a hotel by local teacher John Sellery and his wife.
Over the years the hotel has been home to a number of Mold's most well known organisations, including Inner Wheel and 41 Club and has hosted famous faces such as George Melly, Allo Allo's Vicki Michelle and musician Alan Price as well as many others who have appeared at the town's theatre.
A distinctive design, Bryn Awel has had all of its 18 bedrooms refurbished, along with the bar area and the car park.
Greg, who took over the running of the hotel in 1999 has a long history of managing hotels, most notably the Moat House in Bolton and Jarvis Hotels across the UK. He met his wife Lynn, who works at Barclays Bank in Mold when they both worked at the Arches bar at Beaufort Park Hotel.
"My vision is of Bryn Awel as a country retreat in the town. It is in an ideal location for business and pleasure and I am keen to encourage local people to take a new look at what we are doing as much has changed, even in a short time," he says.
A trained chef, Greg prides himself on developing new and inspiring menus with good wine and has set about introducing themed evenings for private parties and candlelit suppers as part of the hotel's new look and feel.
"Good fresh, home-cooked food is vital to a successful operation and we are getting lots of positive feedback from regular and new customers alike. Our restaurant is busy and bookings for weddings are looking good for 2004 and into 2005. We also have full conference facilities, which are well used by local businesses. "
Greg is also keen to invest in and develop his staff, including Chef and General Assistant Theresa Jones who has been with the hotel for 19 years and barman Phil Morgan, a former Grosvenor Hotel banqueting waiter. He is currently encouraging all staff to learn sign language to help communicate with members of Mold-based Barraclough Deaf Club who meet at the hotel every Friday.
